CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PREVIEW

Arsenal aim for top spot as City seek Europa consolation.

Manchester City's UEFA Champions League campaign concludes with an away game against Borussia Dortmund, while Arsenal will be hoping to finish top of Group B.

The top two spots have already been filled in each of the four groups taking centre stage on Tuesday night, but those who have qualified will be jostling for position as the winners will avoid each other in the draw for the last 16.

The teams missing out on progression to the knockout stages will also be doing their utmost to finish third so they can at least extend their continental adventure by switching across to the Europa League.

Manchester City are currently bottom of Group D after a second straight year of disappointment in Europe's No.1 competition, and Roberto Mancini will be hoping to sign off in style with a victory over Borussia Dortmund in Germany. The Premier League champions are currently one point adrift of Ajax and need a favour from second-placed Real Madrid to climb up to third.

Jose Mourinho, this week linked with a move away from Real Madrid at the end of the season, is likely to rest a number of key men against Ajax at the Santiago Bernabeu as Borussia Dortmund are guaranteed top spot.

Arsene Wenger has insisted he would not swap places with Manchester City and shrugged off talk of a crisis ahead of Arsenal's final group game against Olympiakos. The Gunners boss has had to contend with fresh questions about his future after Saturday's home defeat against Swansea left them tenth in the Premier League, and he will now be looking to get back on track in Greece.

Arsenal need to win and hope that fellow qualifiers Schalke fail to beat Montpellier away from home if they are to top the group, with the French champions determined to finish with a flourish even though they are destined to end bottom.

Elsewhere in Europe, Malaga and AC Milan have already clinched first and second place respectively in Group C so the focus will be on who can make it through to the Europa League.

Zenit St Petersburg and Anderlecht are level on points and shared 1-0 victories in their head-to-head, so it will all come down to how Zenit fare away to AC Milan and the Belgians' clash at Malaga.

Top spot is on the line in Group A as current leaders Porto aim to protect their one-point lead by avoiding defeat away to Paris St Germain.

Dynamo Kiev will move across to the Europa League after Christmas and will be aiming for a victory in their final match against a Dinamo Zagreb side yet to pick up a single point.

The midweek Premier League action sees the Manchester clubs continue to tussle for the top spot under pressure from surprise high-fliers West Brom.

Chelsea will be keep to get back on track as Rafael Benitez looks for his first win as manager, while Tottenham and Liverpool will both be looking to climb the table when they collide in North London.

Manchester City will be out to reclaim top spot in the table when they travel to Wigan.

Manchester United will look to keep their neighbours at bay when they play host to West Ham, having come from behind to see off lowly QPR on Saturday.

Benitez is seeking his first triumph as Chelsea manager after his debut game in charge ended in a goalless draw against Manchester City, and will be looking for three points to revive the Blues' fortunes when they entertain mid-table Fulham.

In-form West Brom travel to Swansea on the back of four consecutive wins which have lifted them into third place and could further increase the heat on the Manchester clubs with victory in South Wales.

Elsewhere, Everton have gone off the boil in recent weeks with just one win in their last seven games and will be looking to turn that around with a home result against Arsenal, who sit a point behind in sixth place ahead of the trip to Merseyside.

Newcastle's slump continued as they suffered a third straight defeat at Southampton on Saturday and Alan Pardew's men will be desperate to turn things around when they visit Stoke.

Resurgent Southampton have climbed out of the bottom three with back-to-back successes and will look to extend that winning run when they host Norwich.

I will make the post about the results of these games!!!

Arsenal come from four goals down to win 7-5 at Reading in Capital One Cup classic!

Theo Walcott scored a hat-trick as Arsenal produced an incredible comeback in what was probably the most remarkable game in the history of the League Cup to win 7-5 after extra time at Reading.
A Jason Roberts volley, Laurent Koscielny's own goal, Mikele Leigertwood's strike and Noel Hunt's header inside the opening 37 minutes at the Madejski Stadium appeared to be sending former Gunner Brian McDermott's Reading into the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup.
But a truly astonishing Arsenal turnaround came as Walcott started and finished, with the final kick of normal time, a stunning fightback at 4-4 with goals either side of headers from substitute Olivier Giroud and Koscielny.
Forgotten man Marouane Chamakh then looked like he had won the tie in extra time but, with the additional half-an-hour almost complete, Pavel Pogrebnyak delivered yet another grand twist with an equalizer at 5-5.

Reading, though, suffered the final heartbreak as first Walcott and then Chamakh settled the 12-goal epic to leave Wenger looking bemused and McDermott inconsolable in the respective dugouts.
It appeared as if it was going to be a most recent stumble from Arsenal, who have been trophy-less for seven years, after a nervy win over Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League on Saturday had seemingly only papered over their cracked confidence of defeats by Norwich City and Schalke and a controversial AGM.
It was an explosive start, which should have offered a clue of what was to come, and soon Arsenal were behind as Roberts shook off his marker, Koscielny, inside the six-yard box to slide and meet Hal Robson-Kanu's 12th minute cross.
Wenger's team were rocking as they continued to make a wretched, error-strewn beginning and they found themselves two goals down in the 18th minute, when Koscielny's nightmare first half continued by poking a Garath McCleary cross into his own net.

Things were to get worse for the visitors just two minutes later, with Chamakh, who was making his first start for Arsenal since January among 11 first-team changes, giving the ball away and goalkeeper Damian Martinez making a mess of Leigertwood's soft shot.
But still Arsenal's first-half misery was not complete and in the 38th minute, from another McCleary cross, Hunt's header made it 4-0 to leave some visiting fans seemingly heading for the exits.

Arsenal, though, rescued some hope on the stroke of half-time, when Walcott dinked a finish over Adam Federici and the goal proved to be a turning point in a historic night which saw Wenger's unchanged 11 players emerge for the second half as if they were a different team.
In the 62nd minute, Giroud entered the fray and instantly added to the impetus by expertly heading into the back of the net just two minutes later as Reading began to show the nerves of a squad who sit without a win in the Premier League relegation zone.

Koscielny's 89th minute header from a corner then had McDermott's side really twitching at 4-3 and it proved too much for them to handle, with Walcott scrambling an effort just over the line with the last kick of six minutes added time to set up an extra half-an-hour.
Extra time was therefore required after a quite sensational and, given Arsenal's ineptitude in the first half, totally unpredicted comeback, which gave the visitors the momentum at a time when Reading, who have never beaten their London opponents in any competition, were crumbling.
In the 103rd minute, Chamakh proved to be one of the heroes when hitting an effort from range past the despairing Federici but Pogrebnyak's 116th minute header seemingly set up a penalty shoot-out.
Arsenal had other ideas and Walcott ensured he would keep the match-ball when finishing a Koscielny and Andrey Arshavin-led counter-attack before Chamakh ended any doubts by lobbing in the final goal of the night to secure a breathless 7-5 result.

"In a way, what happened was a good experience for us because we have to defend better," surmised goalkeeper Petr Cech after Chelsea saw their backline repeatedly shredded in last week's 2-1 defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk. "We played well when we had the ball but not when we didn't have it. If you do this against Manchester United, you are in big danger because they are the same type of team. Hopefully it was a good lesson and we learn for the weekend."

After just 12 minutes of Chelsea's visit of the Red Devils at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon, it seemed clear the Blues still have some lessons to learn.
With captain John Terry looking on from the stands as he continues his suspension, manager Roberto Di Matteo was forced to reshuffle his backline from midweek, bringing in Gary Cahill alongside David Luiz at the heart of defense.

From the opening whistle, things looked suspect at the back as United's lively attacking force sprung out of the traps, with Ashley Cole the most obvious player struggling in the opening half. By restoring wingers to his side in Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young, Sir Alex Ferguson effectively stretched open the home side, with Cole lacking support on the left wing and forced to deal with Valencia and full-back Rafael.

One moment where this deficiency was especially evident came in the build-up to United's second goal as Cole was caught out of position trying to subdue Rafael, who poked a pass through to Valencia in bags of space on the right.

But Cole wasn't the only one having problems as Luiz and Cahill struggled to deal with the attacking threat of a lively Robin van Persie. The former had a particularly tough afternoon as he and Cahill endeavored to hold things steady at center-back in the absence of their suspended skipper.

It can be argued Luiz was unlucky to concede a fourth-minute own-goal as the ball pinged off the post from Van Persie's shot and went in off his back, but his role in United's second goal was less excusable as he failed to deal with Valencia's cross.

The Brazilian, who has developed a reputation for being error-prone during his time at the Bridge, made some poor decisions as United took control and his display did nothing to dispel the suggestion he is more comfortable with Terry as his center-half partner.

Missed

It appeared Terry was missed in general, with his leadership qualities and ability to organize things at the back glaringly absent. Yes, the skipper was part of the backline that struggled to deal with Shakhtar in midweek, but that was also a backline left exposed in the opening stages when they conceded an early goal as Ramires, who has excelled in a holding midfield role this season, was pushed wide and Frank Lampard proved less effective as a partner to John Obi Mikel.

Di Matteo restored Ramires to his more familiar position for the visit of United and the industrious midfielder played a key role in the Blues' comeback as he helped push the visiting attack further up the pitch, then added the equalizing goal in the second half.

Unfortunately for Chelsea, a misdemeanor from the other member of Di Matteo's shaky backline, Branislav Ivanovic, left the Blues with an uphill struggle after he was shown a straight red card for his clip on Ashley Young as he advanced on goal.

Ferguson highlighted that sending off as the turning point for United's win in his post-match interview but after clawing their way back, it's fair to say Chelsea were still in it up until referee Mark Clattenburg's controversial sending off of Fernando Torres after he earned a second yellow card for an adjudged dive.

The Blues had no choice but to sit tight and try and preserve the 2-2 scoreline after going down to nine men, and it was at the expense of their creative flair as Oscar and the continually impressive Juan Mata gave way to Cesar Azpilicueta and Ryan Bertrand as Di Matteo attempted to shore-up his defense.

Fittingly after an unconvincing display, it was Luiz who found himself bamboozled once again as the ball went through his legs in the build-up to Javier Hernandez's winner - even if it was offside.

Quality

There is no questioning the quality in Chelsea's attack this season, with midfield maestros Hazard, Mata and Oscar having all impressed, but such marauding attacking play needs a watertight foundation to be based on and that was distinctly lacking in the first half against United. The Blues have boasted the characteristics of title contenders already this term but, as was evident on Sunday, problems at the back can prove costly, even without the added obstacle of the controversial decisions which halted a potential Chelsea comeback.

However, it isn't as if the leaders' nearest rivals United, who cut the gap to just a point at the weekend, do not have problems of their own at the back. While Ferguson will be relieved they did not continue the worrying trend of conceding first at Stamford Bridge, having done so in eight of their 12 games previously, the manager is unlikely to be happy with them throwing away a two-goal lead in arguably the most important match of the season so far.

Another cause for concern will be the way, despite Chelsea being reduced to nine men, Hazard continued to cause problems for the Red Devils backline, working tirelessly until he was hauled off for Daniel Sturridge late on as Di Matteo tried an unsuccessful last-ditch bid for a goal.

The absence of Nemanja Vidic, still sidelined with injury, has no doubt played a part in United's shortcomings at the back this season, with their defense sometimes looking sluggish as the aging Rio Ferdinand struggles to forge a consistent partnership with Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra dips in and out of form on the left.

The title race is on in earnest after Sunday's encounter, with Chelsea's lead over the two Manchester clubs sliced thin after failing to capitalize on an opportunity to open a seven-point lead. With rivals Chelsea and United looking dangerous going forward but both showing weaknesses at the back, there's already the sense the race for the trophy could be an open affair.

DAVID SILVA SIGNS NEW CONTRACT

Spanish star David Silva has signed a new five-year contract with Manchester City, the Premier League champions have confirmed.

The 26-year-old had two years left on the deal he signed when he joined the club from Valencia in 2010.

Reports had suggested Silva was set to agree terms on a new long-term deal worth £200,000 per week and City have confirmed that he has now put pen-to-paper.
The player revealed his delight at committing to City to 2017, telling the club's official website: "I'm very pleased. I'm delighted to be extending my contract and being here really does feel just like home for me. I've been here for two years now and I feel very happy here at the club, in the city and with all the people. So now I'm delighted to be extending my contract and being here really does feel just like home for me. We've won the Premier League title and two other trophies too, and the team is growing and we are now aiming at the Champions League and so that also is another reason to want to stay here and try and win it.

"As I said, I feel very comfortable here and I want to try and win trophies like those. These last two years have gone very well and so let's hope that the next five go as well or even better. The fans have always given me their support since I arrived here, and recently they've been wanting me to sign, so hopefully this goes someway to thanking them for the affection they've shown towards me, something which also helped me decide to put pen to paper."

START OF THE 2012-13 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

The 2012-13 UEFA Champions League group stage gets underway on Tuesday evening.

Group A:

Dinamo Zagreb v FC Porto
Paris St Germain v Dynamo Kiev

Group B:

Montpellier v Arsenal
Olympiakos v Schalke

Group C:

AC Milan v Anderlecht
Malaga v Zenit

Group D:

Borussia Dortmund v Ajax
Real Madrid v Manchester City

Arsenal kick off their Group B campaign at Montpellier and will be feeling buoyed after hitting Premier League newcomers Southampton for six in a 6-1 triumph on Saturday.

Montpellier are making their first appearance in the Champions League and the French champions will be wary of Arsene Wenger's in-form Gunners, who sit third in the early league standings.

The other Group B fixture is the clash between Greek giants Olympiakos and German side Schalke in Athens, with both teams boasting unbeaten domestic records this season.

Manchester City's maiden Champions League campaign ended in a group-stage exit last year and the league champions will be desperate to better that performance, but face a tough test as they travel to the Bernabeu to take on Real Madrid in their first 'Group of Death' outing.

Shaky start

City will be hoping to take advantage of Los Blancos' shaky early form in La Liga and make a bright start in Madrid, with Borussia Dortmund and Ajax lying in wait in their remaining Group D games.

Those two European heavyweights, and respective winners of the Bundesliga and Eredivisie, go head-to-head in the other match of that group at the Signal Iduna Park.

AC Milan, pipped to the Serie A title by Juventus last season, will begin their bid to add to their seven European titles when they take on Belgian side Anderlecht at the San Siro in Group C.

The other game in that pool will see Spanish side Malaga host Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg, boosted by the summer arrival of highly-rated forward Hulk from FC Porto.

In Group A, big-spending French heavyweights Paris St. Germain play host to Ukrainian side Dynamo Kiev, who have not progressed past the group stage in their last 10 attempts.

Completing the evening's action is FC Porto's trip to Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb, taking part in their fourth Champions League campaign.

RUSSIAN PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE SUMMARY

Hello, my name is Glen Baird. I am from Moscow in Russia.

I have decided to write a summary about the Russian Premier Soccer League for JG Sports Talk.

So, the Russian Football Championship, currently called SOGAZ Russian Football Championship is the top division of Russian football. There are 16 teams in the competition. The league has three Champions League qualifying places given to teams who finish in the top three at the end of the season and two Europe League places to teams who finish fourth and fifth. Relegation to the National League Championship are given to teams who finish bottom and second-bottom at the end of the season.

The Russian Premier League was established in 2001 and succeeded the Top Division, the difference being that the Top Division was run by the Professional Football League of Russia, and the creation of the Premier League gave the clubs a greater degree of independence.

Teams in the Russian Premier League play each other twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 30 matches. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. If teams are equal on points, the tie-breakers are the number of wins, then the goal difference, followed by several other factors.

Spartak Moscow was the dominant force in the Top Division, winning nine of the first ten titles. Spartak-Alania Vladikavkaz was the only team which managed to break Spartak's dominance, winning the Top Division title in 1995. Lokomotiv Moscow won the title twice, and CSKA Moscow three times. In 2007, Zenit St. Petersburg climbed to the top, winning the title for the first time in their history in Russian professional football; they had also won a Soviet title in 1984. 2008 brought the pinnacle of the rise of Rubin Kazan, a club entirely new to the Russian top flight, as it had never even competed in the Soviet Top League.

Unlike most other European football leagues, the league traditionally ran in summer, from March to November, to avoid playing games under the cold and snowy weather in winter. This will be altered ahead of the 2012/13 season, with the league planning to run the season from autumn to spring. The transitional season of the competition began in early 2011 and will continue until summer of 2012.

After the 16 Premier League teams have played each other twice over the course of the year 2011, they will be split into two groups of eight, and the teams will play other teams in their groups two more times for a total of 44 games (30 in 2011 and 14 in 2012). Those two groups will be contested in spring 2012, with the top eight clubs playing for the title and European places. The other sides will vie to avoid relegation: the bottom two will go down while the next two play-off against the sides third and fourth in the National League Championship, with the two losers being relegated.

The following teams are confirmed to compete in the 2012-2013 season:
Amkar, Anzhi, Alania, CSKA, Dynamo, Krasnodar, Krylia Sovetov, Kuban, Lokomotiv, Mordovia, Rostov, Rubin, Spartak, Terek, Volga, Zenit.

Celtic took a point against Benfica on their return to the group stages and, elsewhere, there were wins for Bayern Munich, Shakhtar Donetsk, BATE Borisov and Cluj.

Defending champions Chelsea blew a two-goal lead at the beginning of the defence of their title as Juventus spoiled Oscar's night in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge in Group E.

The Brazilian was making his full debut since joining the Blues this summer and marked it in memorable fashion with two goals in two first-half minutes.

Oscar's opener, in the 31st minute, was with the help of a deflection but there was nothing fortunate about his second as a superb touch set up a stunning, curling 25-yard effort.

Juventus, though, were back in the game before half-time after Arturo Vidal finished from close range in the 38th minute.

And Chelsea's disappointment was compounded in the 80th minute, when Fabio Quagliarella took advantage of John Terry's attempt to play off side to equalize.

Manchester United's Group H campaign began in shaky fashion but Sir Alex Ferguson's men took the points in a 1-0 victory over Galatasaray at Old Trafford.

A one-two with Shinji Kagawa allowed Michael Carrick to give United a dream start, as he rounded the goalkeeper to score the opener in just the seventh minute.

United, though, lost their rhythm and it became a scrappy performance, which was epitomized when Nani's extremely poor second-half penalty was saved by Fernando Muslera.
Shock

Messi scored his 52nd and 53rd goals in the Champions League to save Barcelona against Spartak Moscow when turning what had looked like a defeat into a 3-2 win.

Seconds after losing Gerard Pique to injury, Barcelona, Champions League winners in three of the last seven seasons, took the lead through a wonderfully worked 14th minute finish from the highly-rated Cristian Tello.

However, Dani Alvez's own goal, when the full-back made hash of an attempted clearance, on the half-hour mark gave Spartak a surprise equalizer in their Group G opener.

But if the equalizer was a shock, Spartak taking the lead in the 58th minute was completely against the script as Borges Romulo, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, finished at the end of a swift counter-attack.

Messi, though, came to life after a previously quiet night and equalized in the 71st minute before scoring the winner with 10 minutes remaining.

Celtic's return to the group stages after a four-year absence ended in a 0-0 stalemate with Benfica in Group G's other match.

Goal of the night - MD 1 (Weds)

Boss Neil Lennon had set his side up to ensure they did not lose and, despite a few nervy moments, the Scottish title holders achieved their target.

With Barcelona and Spartak still to come in a tricky section, Celtic will be relying on their home form to keep alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

Bayern got back to winning ways in the Champions League with a seventh victory in eight Champions League outings at the Allianz Arena in a 2-1 success over Valencia in Group F.

Seven minutes before half-time, last season's defeated finalists, Bayern, were in front through Bastian Schweinsteiger before Toni Kroos made it 2-0 in the 76th minute.

Nelson Valdez pulled one back for Valencia late one but the Spanish side had Adil Rami sent off for a second booking before the final whistle.
Dream land

Nordsjaelland's debut in the Champions League group stages ended in frustrating fashion as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk.

It took until the 44th minute for Shakhtar to take the lead, when Henrikh Mkhitaryan made it 1-0.

The midfielder scored a second at the Donbass Arena in the 76th minute to ensure Shakhtar won just a second match in nine Champions League outings to sit above Chelsea and Juventus in Group E.

BATE Borisov won their first ever game in the Champions League group stages as they recorded a 3-1 win at Lille in Group F.

The Belarusian outfit took a sixth minute lead through a great strike from Alexander Volodko and, 14 minutes later, found themselves two goals in front through Vitaly Rodionov.

Two minutes before half-time, BATE were in dream land as Edgar Olekhnovich made it 3-0 and there was no way back for Lille, despite Aurelien Chedjou's 60th minute consolation.

Cluj recorded one of the surprise results of the night as they stunned Braga in United's Group H with a 2-0 win.

Rafael Bastos gave the Romanian champions the lead in the 19th minute and the former Braga player then made it two in the 34th minute with a well-taken effort.

DAY ONE OF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Group A:
Dinamo Zagreb 0-2 FC Porto
Paris St Germain 4-1 Dynamo Kiev
Group B:
Montpellier 1-2 Arsenal
Olympiakos 1-2 Schalke
Group C:
AC Milan 0-0 Anderlecht
Malaga 3-0 Zenit
Group D:
Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Ajax
Real Madrid 3-2 Manchester City
Group E:
Shakhtar 2-0 Nordsjaelland
Chelsea 2-2 Juventus
Group F:
BATE 3-1 Lille
Bayern 2-1 Valencia
Group G:
Barcelona 3-1 Spartak Moscow
Celtic 0-0 Benfica
Group H:

That's all games of 1st Champions League Day.
