DAVID SILVA SIGNS NEW CONTRACT

Spanish star David Silva has signed a new five-year contract with Manchester City, the Premier League champions have confirmed.

The 26-year-old had two years left on the deal he signed when he joined the club from Valencia in 2010.

Reports had suggested Silva was set to agree terms on a new long-term deal worth £200,000 per week and City have confirmed that he has now put pen-to-paper.
The player revealed his delight at committing to City to 2017, telling the club's official website: "I'm very pleased. I'm delighted to be extending my contract and being here really does feel just like home for me. I've been here for two years now and I feel very happy here at the club, in the city and with all the people. So now I'm delighted to be extending my contract and being here really does feel just like home for me. We've won the Premier League title and two other trophies too, and the team is growing and we are now aiming at the Champions League and so that also is another reason to want to stay here and try and win it.

"As I said, I feel very comfortable here and I want to try and win trophies like those. These last two years have gone very well and so let's hope that the next five go as well or even better. The fans have always given me their support since I arrived here, and recently they've been wanting me to sign, so hopefully this goes someway to thanking them for the affection they've shown towards me, something which also helped me decide to put pen to paper."

START OF THE 2012-13 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

The 2012-13 UEFA Champions League group stage gets underway on Tuesday evening.

Group A:

Dinamo Zagreb v FC Porto
Paris St Germain v Dynamo Kiev

Group B:

Montpellier v Arsenal
Olympiakos v Schalke

Group C:

AC Milan v Anderlecht
Malaga v Zenit

Group D:

Borussia Dortmund v Ajax
Real Madrid v Manchester City

Arsenal kick off their Group B campaign at Montpellier and will be feeling buoyed after hitting Premier League newcomers Southampton for six in a 6-1 triumph on Saturday.

Montpellier are making their first appearance in the Champions League and the French champions will be wary of Arsene Wenger's in-form Gunners, who sit third in the early league standings.

The other Group B fixture is the clash between Greek giants Olympiakos and German side Schalke in Athens, with both teams boasting unbeaten domestic records this season.

Manchester City's maiden Champions League campaign ended in a group-stage exit last year and the league champions will be desperate to better that performance, but face a tough test as they travel to the Bernabeu to take on Real Madrid in their first 'Group of Death' outing.

Shaky start

City will be hoping to take advantage of Los Blancos' shaky early form in La Liga and make a bright start in Madrid, with Borussia Dortmund and Ajax lying in wait in their remaining Group D games.

Those two European heavyweights, and respective winners of the Bundesliga and Eredivisie, go head-to-head in the other match of that group at the Signal Iduna Park.

AC Milan, pipped to the Serie A title by Juventus last season, will begin their bid to add to their seven European titles when they take on Belgian side Anderlecht at the San Siro in Group C.

The other game in that pool will see Spanish side Malaga host Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg, boosted by the summer arrival of highly-rated forward Hulk from FC Porto.

In Group A, big-spending French heavyweights Paris St. Germain play host to Ukrainian side Dynamo Kiev, who have not progressed past the group stage in their last 10 attempts.

Completing the evening's action is FC Porto's trip to Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb, taking part in their fourth Champions League campaign.

RUSSIAN PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE SUMMARY

Hello, my name is Glen Baird. I am from Moscow in Russia.

I have decided to write a summary about the Russian Premier Soccer League for JG Sports Talk.

So, the Russian Football Championship, currently called SOGAZ Russian Football Championship is the top division of Russian football. There are 16 teams in the competition. The league has three Champions League qualifying places given to teams who finish in the top three at the end of the season and two Europe League places to teams who finish fourth and fifth. Relegation to the National League Championship are given to teams who finish bottom and second-bottom at the end of the season.

The Russian Premier League was established in 2001 and succeeded the Top Division, the difference being that the Top Division was run by the Professional Football League of Russia, and the creation of the Premier League gave the clubs a greater degree of independence.

Teams in the Russian Premier League play each other twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 30 matches. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. If teams are equal on points, the tie-breakers are the number of wins, then the goal difference, followed by several other factors.

Spartak Moscow was the dominant force in the Top Division, winning nine of the first ten titles. Spartak-Alania Vladikavkaz was the only team which managed to break Spartak's dominance, winning the Top Division title in 1995. Lokomotiv Moscow won the title twice, and CSKA Moscow three times. In 2007, Zenit St. Petersburg climbed to the top, winning the title for the first time in their history in Russian professional football; they had also won a Soviet title in 1984. 2008 brought the pinnacle of the rise of Rubin Kazan, a club entirely new to the Russian top flight, as it had never even competed in the Soviet Top League.

Unlike most other European football leagues, the league traditionally ran in summer, from March to November, to avoid playing games under the cold and snowy weather in winter. This will be altered ahead of the 2012/13 season, with the league planning to run the season from autumn to spring. The transitional season of the competition began in early 2011 and will continue until summer of 2012.

After the 16 Premier League teams have played each other twice over the course of the year 2011, they will be split into two groups of eight, and the teams will play other teams in their groups two more times for a total of 44 games (30 in 2011 and 14 in 2012). Those two groups will be contested in spring 2012, with the top eight clubs playing for the title and European places. The other sides will vie to avoid relegation: the bottom two will go down while the next two play-off against the sides third and fourth in the National League Championship, with the two losers being relegated.

The following teams are confirmed to compete in the 2012-2013 season:
Amkar, Anzhi, Alania, CSKA, Dynamo, Krasnodar, Krylia Sovetov, Kuban, Lokomotiv, Mordovia, Rostov, Rubin, Spartak, Terek, Volga, Zenit.
